There was much speculation about a possible appearance by Madonna (67) at London Pride. However, the singer reportedly according to "The Sun" canceled her surprise visit planned for Saturday at short notice - due to security concerns. The expected crowds in the British capital were said to be the decisive factor.
Pride Organizers Confirm Madonna Won't Attend
Previously, rumors had circulated that Madonna was supposed to perform alongside Beth Ditto and MNEK at Trafalgar Square. Pride in London put an end to the speculation on social media. "In response to the rumors, we can confirm that Madonna will not be appearing or performing at Pride in London," the organization announced. A source explained the background to the British newspaper. "Madge had been very excited to participate in the event, as she is such a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights," the insider is quoted as saying. "However, her team decided against participating at the last minute due to the large crowds, fearing she could turn the well-organized event into utter chaos."
The cancellation comes during a busy time for Madonna. Just on July 3, she had presented her new album at Magazine London. "Confessions II" is the singer's 15th studio album.
Tens of Thousands at the Parade
Even without Madonna, the parade still drew tens of thousands. According to the organizers, more than 35,000 people from over 600 groups participated on Saturday. The procession led from Hyde Park Corner via Piccadilly to Whitehall Place. People danced on the floats, and music blared from the loudspeakers. London football clubs such as Arsenal, West Ham and Crystal Palace also joined in with their own floats.
