The shaved head has long become actor Dave Bautista's (57) trademark. Will an imposing full beard soon be added? The war god for the series adaptation of the video game God of War needs a new actor, and Amazon has apparently found their man in Bautista. This is reported by US industry publication Variety, citing insiders.
The search became necessary due to a painful incident on set. Ryan Hurst (50), who had taken on the role of title antihero Kratos in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep during filming. According to Variety, a return to camera wouldn't have been possible until 2027. Amazon and Sony therefore decided against waiting and opted for a recast. The Prime Video series is scheduled to resume filming in the fall.
A Candidate Who Needs No Preparation Time
This tight schedule reportedly favors Bautista. In the games, Kratos is a brutal one-man army. The former WWE star is among the few stars in Hollywood who bring the necessary physique without months of preparation. Added to this is an established business relationship with the streaming service: For Amazon MGM Studios, he has already appeared in The Wrecking Crew, My Spy, and My Spy: The Eternal City, and he's also set for Road House 2 and the Highlander reboot.
From the Ring to Major Franchises
After his wrestling career, Bautista remained remarkably versatile in the film business. He played Drax six times in the Marvel universe, and was also part of Denis Villeneuve's first two Dune films and Blade Runner 2049. Most recently, he lent his voice to a character in the animated film Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Father and Son Among Norse Gods
Prime Video has committed to two seasons of God of War. The story of the two most recent games will be told: Kratos must raise his ten-year-old son Atreus while simultaneously taking on the Norse pantheon. The synopsis states: "Father and son, Kratos and Atreus, embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. On their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus wants to teach his father to be a better man."
Young star Callum Vinson remains on board as Atreus. Around him is also a prominent ensemble: Max Parker plays Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is Thor, Mandy Patinkin takes on Odin, and Ed Skrein portrays Baldur. Additionally, Alastair Duncan embodies the talking head Mimir, while Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka are featured as the bickering brother duo Brok and Sindri.
