Alexander Zverev (29) has done it: The Hamburg native is in the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career. In Friday's semifinal, he defeated British home favorite Arthur Fery (23) with 7:6 (7:0), 6:2, and 6:4. As "Sportschau" reports, Zverev is the first German since Boris Becker in 1995 to reach the final of the grass court classic.
For the many British stars in the stands of Centre Court, however, the German's success meant the end of a tennis fairy tale. The prominent spectators included Benedict Cumberbatch (49) and his wife, theater director Sophie Hunter (48). The couple sat right next to "The Hobbit" star Martin Freeman (54). Cumberbatch watched the match in a gray suit with tinted sunglasses, Hunter wore a lime green floral dress, Freeman wore a beige suit with a striped tie.
Star-studded lineup despite scorching heat
The three actors were in good company. Despite high temperatures, according to "Daily Mail", Keira Knightley with husband James Righton, Richard E. Grant, "Vogue" icon Anna Wintour, director Baz Luhrmann, Hugh Laurie, and Prince Michael of Kent were among those at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Fery's parents were also cheering him on: mother Olivia (53), herself a former tennis professional, and father Loïc (52), a wealthy hedge fund manager, watched their son's match separately from each other, as the couple has been divorced since 2022.
Zverev will face the winner of the match between defending champion Jannik Sinner and record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final. Just five weeks after his triumph at the French Open, the Olympic champion now has the chance to win his second consecutive major title. As patron of the tournament, Princess Kate (44) is expected to traditionally present the trophy to the winner.
