There's a new addition on the way in Axel Milberg's (70) family: The fifth grandchild is expected. The actor revealed this in an interview with the Bild newspaper around his 70th birthday.
The news came up when Milberg was asked about the so-called empty nest syndrome, which some couples suffer from when their children move out. He and his wife Judith Milberg show little sign of it. "Our youngest son still lives with us, he's currently doing an apprenticeship. Sometimes we don't see him for days," the actor said. "And the nest keeps getting filled again by our wild bunch of grandchildren. We can now clean up after their visits in under 35 minutes. Hooray! The fifth grandchild is on the way."
No Grandfather in a Rocking Chair
Nevertheless, Milberg doesn't see himself fitting the common image of grandpa in a rocking chair. "No. Unfortunately, I get sick in a rocking chair. I actually get seasick," he answered Bild when asked the question.
He's not thinking about quitting professionally either. He will "cheerfully continue working," but has nothing against being in the garden and pruning roses. "You can learn so many new things. That never stops." He can't do much with the round number itself: He was filming until last week and didn't have time to think about it.
India Instead of Beach Vacation
For the new decade of life, the Milbergs have planned a trip they've repeatedly postponed. "My wife and I want to travel through India," he told Bild. "We're very curious about that. But maybe it'll be Australia instead."
It won't be relaxing. Milberg explained to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) that he and his wife never travel as tourists and never take vacations. After five minutes, you jump up anyway and wonder what's behind the next building. When asked if he wouldn't lie on the beach for a week at 70, he answered RND briefly: "Absolutely not. No roles lying down."
A Life After Tatort
From 2003 to 2025, Milberg investigated as Chief Inspector Klaus Borowski in the Kiel Tatort. He doesn't miss the character according to his own statement; he told RND that the farewell was "a huge gift." To Bild, he quoted his colleague Harrison Ford on the topic of career endings: It's difficult to get into the profession, but even more difficult to find your way out.
He has plenty of work. On September 17, the film Adams Acht about the Germany eight's Olympic victory in 1960 comes to theaters, and in November the Disney+ series Vienna Game about the Congress of Vienna is set to follow. Milberg has one son from his first marriage and another with Judith Milberg, who brought two children into the marriage.
