Aubrey Plaza (41) spoke out on Instagram over the weekend with a sobering message. Prime Video has not ordered a second season of her new series "Kevin", the comedian announced. "This is very disappointing, as we were just getting our stride", she wrote. The first season had only launched on the Amazon streaming service on April 20 of this year.
The "White Lotus" actress thanked all the fans as well as "the entire amazing cast and crew who worked so hard to make this dream come true".
Blow to series creator Aubrey Plaza
For Aubrey Plaza, the series cancellation is particularly bitter. After all, in "Kevin", the "White Lotus" actress didn't just lend her voice to a character. She also co-created the adult animation series with Joe Wengert.
"Kevin" is about the titular anthropomorphic cat who moves into an animal shelter after his human owners separate. There, the pampered house cat meets a group of animal misfits.
In addition to Aubrey Plaza, well-known names were active as voice actors. Jason Schwartzman (45) voiced the title character, alongside Whoopi Goldberg (70) as a hairless cat and cult director John Waters (80).
Aubrey Plaza recalls "Parks and Recreation"
In her Instagram post, Aubrey Plaza recalled the sitcom "Parks and Recreation", which gave her her breakthrough. When the first season had poor ratings in 2009, she and her co-stars expected cancellation. "But we had some very special people at NBC who believed in the show, let us grow, and allowed the audience to fall in love with our characters", she wrote.
With "Kevin", she had hoped for a similar development. But: "unfortunately, we are living in a different time in our industry", she lamented. "I hope the machines don't ruin everything", she wrote, alluding to the increasingly strong influence of artificial intelligence.
"Maybe Kevin will find a new owner one day", she concluded her statement. And: "I love you all very much. Meow."
