A new Madonna album is rarely just a new Madonna album. When the Queen of Pop returns, it's always about images, messages, self-references, and the big question of which version of Madonna (67) will take the stage this time. For "Confessions II", she's banking on exactly that - and got her fans excited for the next round on the dance floor even before its release on July 3.

First Hints Two Years Ago

As early as 2024, Madonna hinted that she was working on new songs. The Queen of Pop posted a video on Instagram showing impressions from the studio. In the clip, Madonna wrote that she was working on new material with producer Stuart Price (48). The months Madonna spent in the studio, she describes as "medicine for my soul". Because: "Writing songs and making music is the only area where I don't have to ask anyone for permission."

Price had already produced "Confessions on a Dance Floor" (2005) - the album that achieved triple platinum in Germany, climbed to number one on the charts, and was honored at the Grammys as Best Electronic/Dance Album. The hit "Hung Up" stormed the charts worldwide at the time, and the single "Sorry" also became a classic.

In mid-April came the official announcement of the release date for "Confessions On A Dance Floor: Part II". It's the 15th studio album and the singer's first since "Madame X" from 2019. The album cover shows Madonna sitting on a large speaker with a veil covering her face. The pose recalls the artwork of the 2005 original.

Madonna repeatedly emphasized on social media the importance that dance music holds for her: "People think that dance music is superficial", she wrote in May on Instagram. "But they are completely wrong." The dance floor is not just a place, it is "a ritual space where movement replaces language. 'Confessions II' is a love letter to dance music and to all the places and communities that create or enjoy it." The dance floor isn't about a specific place or building, "it's wherever we gather to dance, celebrate, and connect with one another".

Coachella, First Songs, and a Music Film

What followed were appearances and song releases where Madonna gave a taste of the new work. In April, she presented her hits "Vogue", "Like a Prayer", and a previously unreleased duet on the Coachella stage with headliner Sabrina Carpenter (27). Shortly after, the collaborative song "Bring Your Love" was released. Carpenter explained: "Thank you, Madonna, for inviting me to be part of 'Confessions II.' I hope you all like [the song]. Put your phone down, go out and dance!" Madonna also released the songs "I Feel So Free" and "Love Sensation" in advance.

In early June, she transformed Times Square into an open-air dance floor - and used the start of Pride Month for a concert where she played songs from her new album live for the first time in the middle of Manhattan.

A short film was also part of the buildup to "Confessions II". In the approximately 14-minute YouTube video, six of the 16 songs can be heard and no fewer than 16 celebrities can be seen. With Kate Moss and Benedict Cumberbatch, she hosts a dance party in a club restroom; with Sabrina Carpenter, she performs the track "Bring Your Love" on a concert stage. Daughter Lourdes Leon appears in the final scene in a black outfit and a futuristic helmet. Julia Garner, who was supposed to portray the singer in a biopic, rehearses for the role in the video.

While she often appeared in darker looks for "Madame X", she's now once again opting for colorful outfits. These typically include corsets, bodysuits, metallic jackets, high stockings, and laced-up boots.

Another date has already been announced: On July 19, Madonna will perform at the halftime show of the World Cup final.
