Fans of the most famous four-legged star in German-language crime television can rejoice: "Kommissar Rex" is getting another season. At the Screenforce Festival in Düsseldorf on Thursday, Sat.1 officially announced that the reboot of the cult series will continue.

This means German Shepherd Rex and his handler, Inspector Max Steiner alias Maximilian Brückner (47), will once again hunt down criminals. The new episodes are scheduled to air in spring 2027.

Strong Ratings Pave the Way

"Kommissar Rex" made television history with its first appearance in 1994. The humorous crime series was sold to 125 countries and translated into languages including Mandarin and Vietnamese. Until the end of 2004, Tobias Moretti, Gedeon Burkhard, and Alexander Pschill took on the role alongside the German Shepherd. The reboot, after 22 years, in cooperation between ORF and Sat.1, launched in April.

And with great success: The ratings for the six-episode reboot were significantly above the channel average. The episodes typically reached over 1.5 million viewers, achieving between 5 and 8 percent market share.

How the First Season Ended

For those who missed the finale of the reboot: The sixth and final episode was titled "Der Rosenkavalier". In it, Steiner and Rex are initially honored for their service - until the celebration is abruptly interrupted when a young woman is found dead. The perpetrator's signature matches exactly the crimes of a long-convicted serial killer. In the end, a copycat is revealed as the mastermind, whom the team ultimately apprehends - not least thanks to Rex's keen nose. And because the episode already hints at the next case, the investigators are unlikely to run out of material anytime soon.

In addition to Brückner, the first season also featured Doris Golpashin, Ferdinand Seebacher, Alfred Dorfer, Marie Burchard, and Sophie Borchhardt. It is not yet known who will return alongside the lead actor.
