The director of the film cannot witness the 40th anniversary of the coming-of-age classic "Stand by Me". The tragic death of Rob Reiner (1947-2025) has, however, brought the stars of his cult film, which premiered in U.S. theaters in August 1986, back together. On December 14, 2025, Reiner and his wife were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home. Their son Nick Reiner was charged with double murder, and the proceedings are not yet concluded.

Jerry O'Connell (52), Corey Feldman (55), and Wil Wheaton (53) used joint appearances to honor the late filmmaker. The stars of "Stand by Me" had already experienced a devastating loss when River Phoenix died of a drug overdose at age 23 in 1993. At a screening for the film's 25th anniversary, Reiner himself stated that "it feels like there should be a chair here for River".

Four Friends Searching for a Body

The drama tells the story of four friends in the summer of 1959 who search for the body of a boy their age who was supposedly hit by a train. Gordie LaChance (Wil Wheaton), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman), and Vern Tessio (Jerry O'Connell) embark on an adventure without realizing it's actually a race to be the first to find Ray Brower's body. The local thugs, led by the sadistic Ace Merrill (Kiefer Sutherland), are also on their way there.

The film's success turned its young actors into stars. Not all of them found personal and professional happiness afterward. Here's what became of the "Stand by Me" leads.

Wil Wheaton

Wil Wheaton unwillingly slipped into the role of child star. He later spoke openly about being pushed into his acting career by his overly demanding mother and aggressive father. "As a child, I didn't want to be an actor. My parents forced me to do it", he told "Yahoo! Movies" in 2021 and added that this reality "put me in the exact position to play Gordie. Because Gordie's experiences very much mirrored my own experiences".

Just one year after "Stand by Me" came his long-running role as Wesley Crusher in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-1994). Later, he temporarily retreated from the spotlight. When Wheaton finally returned to television, he played a fictionalized version of himself in "The Big Bang Theory", occasionally serving as Sheldon Cooper's nemesis. He also regularly worked as a voice actor, taking on roles in series ranging from "Teen Titans" to "Star Trek: Prodigy". The former child star is an avid gamer, author, and game show host. As someone affected, he also advocates for raising awareness about mental illness. He has been married to Anne Prince since 1999. The couple has two sons.

River Phoenix

In his short career, River Phoenix left a huge mark on the film world: He played Harrison Ford's (84) son in "The Mosquito Coast" (1986) and portrayed his younger self in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989). His performance in Gus Van Sant's (74) "My Own Private Idaho" (1991) remains iconic to this day. After that, he filmed "Sneakers" (1992), which would be one of his final films.

In 1989, River Phoenix was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Danny Pope in Sidney Lumet's film "Running on Empty". His brother Joaquin Phoenix (51) is now a well-known Hollywood star and Oscar winner. He named his son, born in 2020, after his older brother River.

Corey Feldman

Corey Feldman had achieved his breakthrough a year before "Stand by Me" with "The Goonies" (1985) and subsequently became known as one of the "Two Coreys" - the other being young heartthrob Corey Haim (1971-2010). In the late 1980s, they appeared together in several films, including "The Lost Boys" (1987).

The young star's life quickly spiraled out of control after early success, and in full public view. Feldman struggled with addiction. He was also known for his friendship with Michael Jackson (1958-2009). He later claimed to have been a victim of inappropriate advances and mistreatment as a child star in Hollywood, but never accused Jackson. Feldman continues to work as a musician, actor, and voice actor and has also participated in U.S. reality shows. He has a son with his ex-wife Susie Sprague.

Jerry O'Connell

For Jerry O'Connell, "Stand by Me" was his first film role. Although he has had additional appearances on the big screen since then - such as in "Scream 2" (1997) or "Jerry Maguire" (1996) - he has been a television mainstay for decades. His successes include leading roles in science fiction series like "My Secret Identity" (1988-1991) and "Sliders" (1995-1999), as well as major roles in "Crossing Jordan" (2002-2007) and "Billions" (2016-2018).

In 2007, O'Connell married model and actress Rebecca Romijn (53). The couple has twin daughters who were born in 2008.
