Timothée Chalamet (30) and Selena Gomez (33) are taking on the lead roles in the animated film "Not Alone" from Illumination Studios. The casting was announced at the International Animated Film Festival in Annecy. This was reported by "The Hollywood Reporter".

Chalamet had already announced the news on Sunday evening in his Instagram Story. There, he shared a picture of a cloudy sky with the note "new film announcement tomorrow" and a small rocket emoji. Universal and Illumination released the film poster on Monday on social media. "Not Alone" is set to premiere in U.S. theaters on April 16, 2027.

First animated film for Chalamet

For Chalamet, this is his first theatrical animated film. He previously had a voice role in the 2022 animated Netflix special "Entergalactic". In "Not Alone", he voices the introverted rocket mechanic Joe, while Gomez lends her voice to the astrobotanist Fran, who is working on the first plant-powered rocket. According to a plot summary from Universal, Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the rocket's maiden flight.

Although sparks fly between them immediately, they are both inexperienced when it comes to dealing with emotions. Things get complicated when three little aliens named Dunk, Welly, and Shirm hide out in Joe's home. They are on the run from an overzealous but unlucky law enforcement officer named Zandro and hope that Fran's rocket will provide a way back to their homeland.

The three aliens are voiced by British comedians Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou, with Brett Goldstein taking on the voice of officer Zandro. The rest of the voice cast includes Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris. The film is directed by Eric Guillon, co-director of "Despicable Me 3", alongside Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val. The film is produced by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri; Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld serve as executive producers.

Busy schedules for both stars

Chalamet was most recently seen in "Marty Supreme", for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Previously, he was nominated for the Bob Dylan film "A Complete Unknown" (2024) and for "Call Me by Your Name" (2017). Next, he returns as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Three", which is set to hit theaters in December.

Gomez is expected to appear later this year in the sixth season of the series "Only Murders in the Building". She has received multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her role as Mabel Mora. Her list of upcoming projects also includes a film portrait of singer Linda Ronstadt directed by David O. Russell, in which she will take on the lead role.
