Tom Holland (30) has spoken out about his future as Spider-Man. A farewell is not immediately in sight: With "Spider-Man: Brand New Day", coming to theaters on July 31, 2026, Holland will be seen in his fourth solo film and seventh MCU appearance overall as Spider-Man. In a podcast episode of "Happy Sad Confused", the actor spoke openly about the time after his current engagement as the superhero and hinted that plans for his successor are already underway.
According to him, a concept for the character's further development already exists. "There's a whole plan that we've been working on, I would say, since the end of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'", Holland said. "It's set. But it will certainly change as well, even though I have a very clear idea of how the handover should take place, and I find that really exciting." The 30-year-old did not reveal any further details.
He made his debut in "Civil War"
Tom Holland is already the third actor to portray Spider-Man in the rebooted live-action films since 2002 - after Tobey Maguire (51) and Andrew Garfield (42). He made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2016 in "Captain America: Civil War", where he first appeared as young Peter Parker from Queens and as his superhero alter ego Spider-Man.
The following year, the 30-year-old took on the lead role in his first solo film, "Spider-Man: Homecoming", and firmly established himself in the Marvel universe. Numerous other appearances within the MCU followed: in 2018 he was seen in "Avengers: Infinity War", in 2019 in "Avengers: Endgame" as well as in "Spider-Man: Far From Home" the same year. The peak of his Spider-Man series so far was 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home", which grossed around 1.9 billion dollars worldwide. In that film, he appeared on camera alongside his predecessors Maguire and Garfield.
Holland mentions a specific name
Holland recently spoke in an interview with "Esquire" magazine about the possible future of his signature role. According to him, he could also imagine serving as a mentor to the next Spider-Man.
"Just as Robert Downey Jr. (61) was a kind of mentor to me in my first three films, I would like to take on that role for my successor." At the same time, the actor already brought up a specific name who could take over from him. "Owen Cooper (16) would be great. He is of course super talented and currently on everyone's lips."
