Even the Avengers have to take a back seat to Spider-Man. As multiple US industry media outlets report in unison, the new superhero film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has set another record. No other film has earned as much money at the box office during its opening weekend on the combined market in Canada and the US as "Brand New Day".
According to revised figures, the film with Tom Holland (30) and Zendaya (29) in two of the lead roles earned 360 million US dollars in North America last weekend. This is reported by "Deadline" and "The Hollywood Reporter", among others. The previous frontrunner was "Avengers: Endgame", which set a North American record of approximately 357 million US dollars during its opening weekend in 2019.
Previously, it was assumed that "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" would land at an excellent 355 million dollars. That would have placed it just behind "Avengers: Endgame" in second place. The worldwide total revenue for the opening weekend was also corrected from the previous 927 million dollars to 932 million dollars.
Only Two Films Over 300 Million Dollars
The best theatrical opening day now also belongs to "Brand New Day" with adjusted 169.8 million dollars (previously 168 million). Additionally, Tom Holland's superhero was already convincing in the so-called previews. Before the official wide release, 72 million US dollars were earned on Wednesday and Thursday. "Avengers: Endgame" previously held the record here with 60 million dollars. However, for "Endgame", only preview Thursday was counted. All figures are also not adjusted for inflation.
However, "Brand New Day" has not taken all opening records away from "Endgame". The 2019 blockbuster earned around 1.2 billion dollars worldwide during its opening weekend.
