Scarlett Johansson (41) has spoken critically about the dress code that prevailed on Hollywood's red carpets at the beginning of her career. In the video series Home in Five from the US magazine Good Housekeeping, the actress discussed the industry's transformation.
There was such a standard for how movie stars were supposed to look, Johansson said. That was unattainable and it didn't allow for personal style to the extent that it does today. Just over two decades ago, the Oscar nominee noted, she attended major events almost exclusively in evening gowns. Anything else was hardly acceptable back then.
More room for personal taste
The 41-year-old considers the change in this regard a win. Actors can express their personal style on the red carpet much more than they ever could, she said in the clip. Her own career serves as a timeline of this development: Johansson has been a guest on Hollywood's red carpets since the 1990s.
The actress also notices a new sense of ease when it comes to beauty. What once remained behind closed doors now takes place in full public view. Today you see people at the airport or on the train with pimple patches and eye masks, with everything that makes them feel good, she said.
I feel most like myself
The star of Jurassic World: Die Wiedergeburt says she only found her own sense of style over the years. In the Vogue series Life in Looks, she said in 2022 that she was happy to be in her late thirties: I feel most like myself. She hoped to get to know herself even better with age, and that would also be reflected in her looks.
However, there are worlds between her everyday life and evening appointments. She said at the time to Vogue that she opts for neutral colors and simple pieces in private. It only gets more daring when there's a big evening ahead and she feels like experimenting.
Six appearances at the Met Gala
How much she has grown into the fashion world can be seen at the Met Gala. Between 2004 and 2018, Johansson attended the prestigious fashion event in New York six times, her repertoire ranging according to People from Calvin Klein to Marchesa. She mainly remembers her debut as a moment of being overwhelmed.
I really hadn't noticed much of the whole fashion world. That was outside my field of vision, she said in retrospect. She was probably mainly impressed and wondered: What is all this? Seeing all these fashion photographers, models and designers, that was a new world for me.
