Ralf Schumacher (51) is going to be a grandfather. His son David Schumacher (24) and his wife Vivien (25) are expecting their first child, as the couple announced on Wednesday on Instagram. A few hours later, the former Formula 1 driver speaks in an interview with "Bunte.de" about the news. It didn't surprise him.

"I knew that the two of them wanted to become parents early," Schumacher told the portal. This may have something to do with his own biography: David was born when he himself had just turned 26. "The desire was always there for both of them, and I think that's great."

"He's already settled"

The 51-year-old doesn't see it as problematic that his son will only be 25 years old at the birth. What matters are the life circumstances, he told "Bunte.de", and in this case they're right: "Many people are still in college at that age. He's already settled."

Schumacher also sees his own role in a relaxed way. He's glad to still be able to do many things together with his son in his early 50s, he said. When asked how it feels to become a grandfather at 51, he responded with a reference to his hair color, which fits quite well. And continued: "Well, I think it's great, I'm incredibly happy. This way I can still experience everything relatively fit, if I'm lucky."

One detail he's keeping to himself

Schumacher doesn't want to determine yet what kind of grandfather he wants to be. In the end, that also depends on the child, he explained. However, there's one thing he's already looking forward to: "I can also hand it back when I've had enough. You can't do that with your own child."

Whether it's a grandson or granddaughter on the way, he already knows according to his own statement. He doesn't want to reveal it. He also puts the brakes on the question of whether the next generation of Schumachers will later get into a race car: First, it's about the child being born healthy.

Another family announcement within a few months

In February, David Schumacher and Hungarian-born Vivien got married in the presence of family and close friends and subsequently showed the wedding on Instagram. This was preceded by a marriage proposal in the Maldives in November 2025.

Ralf Schumacher himself married his partner Étienne Bousquet-Cassagne (36) this year, with his son serving as his best man. David is from Schumacher's marriage to Cora Schumacher (49), which lasted from 2001 to 2015. The couple had been living separately since 2009. When asked, the 51-year-old only briefly mentioned his ex-wife in the interview: He's happy for his son and hopes that she is too and that "there won't be any more unnecessary things again."

David and Vivien Schumacher made the pregnancy public with an arranged photo. It shows a mirror in the grass against a mountain backdrop, reflecting an image of the couple, along with a teddy bear, a cream-colored blanket, and knitted baby shoes. "Love made us two. Life is making us three," the two wrote.
