Queen Margrethe II (86) attended her first official engagement after two hospital stays. The former Danish Queen appeared at an award ceremony at Fredensborg Palace with a walker and a smile on her face.
The occasion of her appearance was a special one: At Fredensborg Palace, the "Prins Henrik Prisen" was awarded - a prize that commemorates Margrethe's late husband Prince Henrik (1934-2018). He would have turned 92 on June 11. The prize has been awarded annually since 2022 and honors Henrik's passions as a poet and artist. This year, Danish poet and writer Pia Tafdrup was pleased to receive the award and the prize money of 300,000 Danish kroner (approximately 40,140 euros).
Margrethe was released two weeks ago
The former Queen Margrethe was only released from Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on May 29. A CT scan showed a larger hematoma in the hip area, caused by an earlier fall. She had to be treated for the second time within two weeks.
She was first admitted to the clinic on May 14 for observation due to cardiac cramps and subsequently underwent balloon angioplasty - a minimally invasive procedure in which a narrowed cardiac vessel is widened using a small balloon. On May 19, she was initially able to return to Fredensborg Palace.
Due to the hospital stays, Margrethe missed several appointments. She did not appear at the celebrations for her son King Frederik X's 58th birthday. A planned visit to the Pantomime Theater also had to be canceled. On June 6, she was supposed to inaugurate the bridge "Dronning Margrethe IIs Bro" dedicated to her on the island of Falster. Instead, her grandson Crown Prince Christian (20) took over the task.
