Pot belly, gray hair, and cowboy hat: Tom Cruise (64) is barely recognizable in his upcoming film "Digger". Instead of appearing as a well-trained action hero, the "Mission: Impossible" star this time plays an aged, eccentric oil baron and billionaire with a Southern accent. This is shown in an extensive trailer that has now been released.

What the bizarre social satire is about

"Digger" tells the story of the most powerful man in the world who must prevent a catastrophe of unprecedented proportions - even though he caused it himself. "Digger rode us into this mess and Digger will dig us out of it", rants John Goodman (74) in the trailer. Sandra Hüller (48), on the other hand, appears confident at Cruise's side: "You're saving the world for us." On the official social media account, the film is announced as a "comedy of catastrophic proportions".

The cinema experience promises to be unusual. The trailer's images move between social satire and quirky fever dream. "Digger" is directed by multiple Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (62). In addition to Cruise, Goodman, and Hüller, the cast also includes Riz Ahmed (43), Jesse Plemons (38), and "House of the Dragon" star Emma D'Arcy (34). In Germany, the satire opens in theaters on October 1, 2026.

Accompanying the trailer, a fictional cover of "Time" magazine was published on Instagram. It shows Cruise as Digger Rockwell with a shovel in his hand. The character is crowned "Titan of the Year" on it.
