His trademark is gone: Marc Cucurella (28) no longer wears curls, but a braided hairstyle. Celebrity hairstylist Sheldon Edwards gave him the new look. Edwards showed the result in a video on Instagram and commented with the words: "A man who keeps his word."
In the same clip, the second change that the Spanish national team player has made since winning the title can also be seen. On his left upper arm now sits a portrait of national team coach Luis de la Fuente (65).
The Promise Before the Final
The motif is not surprising. "A small tattoo with Luis de la Fuente's face", Cucurella had announced before the final, should Spain win the title. That's exactly what happened: A goal by Ferran Torres (26) in extra time decided the final against Argentina: Spain became world champions for the second time.
Just over a week later, the tattoo was inked. On Instagram, Cucurella wrote: "Promise kept." Another promise from the Spanish squad, however, is still pending. Lamine Yamal (19) had announced that he would grow a beard and mustache for three weeks if they won the title. However, the winger according to "Goal" has apparently not yet started doing so.
The Story Behind the Long Hair
The iconic hairstyle is about more than fashion. Cucurella wore his hair long for years, and there was a personal reason for that. As the Spanish national team player explained in an interview with "La Voz de Galicia", his mother once distinguished him and his siblings in youth soccer by their long hair.
That he has hardly changed his appearance to this day is also likely due to his oldest son: Six-year-old Mateo lives with autism, which is why abrupt changes in his father's appearance could be a great burden for him, as he revealed in the Prime Video documentary series "Married to the Game".
