Miley Cyrus (33) is working on a new album. For the British magazine "Wonderland", Daryl Hannah (65) interviewed the singer, and according to "Wonderland", Cyrus played her some tracks in advance. The singer has not yet officially announced the record. It would be her tenth studio album. She speaks all the more clearly about the subject in the conversation.
"This album is a love story, but love stories are never one-dimensional. They always have multiple layers. There's definitely a romantic thread running through it, because like all my records, it's a mirror of where I am in my life", Cyrus said. This record feels particularly meaningful "because this feeling has accompanied me through multiple eras".
A feeling that lasts three albums
Apparently it's still new for her. "I hadn't really experienced this before. A peaceful kind of love has become a theme across my last three records", explained the singer, who is engaged to musician Maxx Morando (27). But this doesn't just mean love for another person, but also love for oneself.
"That's probably been the biggest evolution. Once your relationship with yourself changes, every relationship around you changes too. I think this record celebrates both equally", Cyrus said. The feeling can only be explained to a limited extent anyway: "Love is dynamic and complex." And further: "It's something we can feel deeply with our hearts, even if we can't always explain it with our heads. For me, love isn't something we need to intellectualize. It's an understanding on a cellular level."
Her fiancé co-writes
As Hannah noted in the interview, the musicians who play on the new songs are also in the songwriting credits. Among them is Morando, a member of the band Liily. Cyrus described how a song comes to be for her as an open process: "For me, a song isn't just chords, melody, and lyrics. It's a feeling. There's no right or wrong like with an answer. It's alive. It almost becomes its own little being that tells you what it needs if you listen."
In the studio, she's therefore less concerned with perfection than with attitude. "I love making records with people who aren't precious about ideas. Everyone is there because they're excited about the same thing. When it works, there's no ego in the room. Just curiosity", the singer said.
Her ninth album "Something Beautiful" was released in 2025, and this year she looked back on her breakthrough role in "Hannah Montana" in a 20-year special on Disney+.
Proposal in a Kyoto garden
Cyrus and Morando have been a couple since 2021 and engaged since 2025. How the proposal came about was told by Morando in a separate "Wonderland" interview published on July 28: It happened during a trip together to Kyoto, Japan.
"For some reason, and you'll find this as crazy as I do, she had never been to Japan. I hadn't either, and we'd both wanted to go there for a very long time. Before the trip, there were conversations about me popping the question, but I was trying to keep it a secret. She wasn't trying to keep it a secret, if you know what I mean", the musician said. He then popped the question towards the end of the trip in a small garden.
