When Maschsee Lake in Hanover transforms into a massive open-air venue, it's that time again: The Maschseefest begins. Lower Saxony's largest lake festival takes place in 2026 from July 22 to August 9 and invites visitors over 19 days to a culinary world tour, live music and numerous events right by the water. Around the lake, visitors can expect food stands from around the world, concerts, sports and family activities.
Opening with Germany's Largest Multisport Event
A special feature this year is the close connection with the Finals 2026. The multisport event unites numerous German championships in one location and brings top athletes to Hanover. From July 23 to 26, competitions in canoe racing and rowing will take place directly on Maschsee Lake. The award ceremonies will be held on the Maschsee stage, making top-level sports directly accessible to the audience.
Another highlight follows on August 1: Thousands of yellow rubber ducks will once again race in the traditional NKR benefit duck race. According to the official NKR website, the proceeds from the so-called Race Ducks support the North German Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Donor Registry in its work. In addition, there are hands-on activities, games and a varied family program for children throughout the entire festival.
Debut for the Ferris Wheel
Among the biggest innovations is the 125-foot-tall ferris wheel on the forecourt of the Heinz von Heiden Arena. From the gondolas, visitors enjoy a wide view over Maschsee Lake and the entire event grounds. For many visitors, the new landmark is likely to become one of the festival's most popular photo opportunities.
The food mile along the shores of the lake has also been expanded. Hannover Veranstaltungs GmbH already lists the numerous food concepts with international offerings: from Italian panini to handmade Maultaschen to Hawaiian specialties and modern fusion concepts. Added to this are daily live music, DJ evenings, wine tastings and themed events on the various shore areas.
A regular feature this year is once again the spectacular torch swim. More than 100 divers transform Maschsee Lake with burning torches into an impressive sea of lights, creating one of the most atmospheric images of the entire festival.
The LGBTQ+ community also gets its money's worth at the Maschseefest: On QueerWednesday, the north shore traditionally transforms into a colorful party mile with DJs, shows and exuberant festival atmosphere. The event has been one of the most popular themed evenings of the Maschseefest for years and simultaneously sends a message for diversity.
What Visitors Should Expect
Admission to the Maschseefest is generally free. Costs are only incurred for food, drinks and individual attractions like the ferris wheel. According to NDR, the events this year start a week earlier than usual due to the Finals. For the same reason, the grounds at the north shore open at noon on the first three days. After that, it starts at 2 p.m. on weekdays and at noon on Sundays. The celebration continues until 1 a.m., one hour longer on Fridays and Saturdays.
Since parking spaces around Maschsee Lake are scarce, the organizers recommend arriving by bus and train or by bicycle. Those who want to experience as many program highlights as possible should take a look at the official event calendar in advance.
