Keanu Reeves (61) is apparently facing his next major franchise project. As the industry magazine "Deadline" reports, the actor is currently in negotiations for the lead role in a new Lego film from Universal Pictures. The film is set to be directed by Josh Cooley (47), with whom he previously worked on "Toy Story 4".
According to the report, this is a hybrid film that combines live-action actors with animated characters. Details about the plot are not yet known. After several development attempts with various writers and directors, the studio is said to have specifically developed the project around a character intended for Reeves. According to insiders, Cooley himself presented his idea for the project. Reeves then agreed.
From Warner to Universal
For Universal, signing the star would have special significance. The studio has owned the film rights to Lego since 2020. According to industry insiders, these rights could have potentially expired if no project had entered concrete pre-production in the coming months.
The previous Lego films are considered major successes. The productions grossed around 1.1 billion US dollars worldwide. Among the best-known titles are "The Lego Movie", "The Lego Batman Movie", and "The Lego Ninjago Movie", all of which were produced at Warner Bros.
Successful Collaboration Between Reeves and Cooley
The first collaboration between Keanu Reeves and Josh Cooley was already crowned with success. In "Toy Story 4", Reeves lent his voice to the character Duke Caboom, while Cooley directed. The animated film grossed more than one billion US dollars worldwide and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
In "Toy Story 5", Reeves returns once again as the voice of Duke Caboom. The film has already been released in US theaters and will premiere in Germany on July 23.
