Now it's official: Jürgen Klopp (59) is taking over the German national football team. The German Football Association (DFB) introduced the former Liverpool FC and Borussia Dortmund coach on Friday as the new national team coach. His contract is set to run until 2030.
Following Julian Nagelsmann's (39) resignation after the disappointing World Cup exit, Klopp was quickly discussed as the DFB's preferred candidate. However, numerous details still had to be clarified in recent weeks - including his exit from his contract with Red Bull as "Head of Global Soccer", which ran until 2029. Now the agreement is finalized.
Klopp brings his trusted team
The new national team coach will be supported by his long-time companions Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders. Former national team player Sven Bender is also joining the coaching staff.
There are also changes in the DFB leadership: In addition to sporting director Rudi Völler, Per Mertesacker will take on an important role as managing director of sports in the future. The 2014 World Cup winner is scheduled to assume his position in early 2027.
Debut in the Nations League
Klopp will manage his first international match as national team coach on September 24. Germany will face the Netherlands away in the opening of the Nations League. Additional matches against Greece and Serbia will follow within a few days. The major goal is already clearly defined: the 2028 European Championship.
Successful career at club level
Jürgen Klopp is among the most successful coaches of recent decades. He achieved his breakthrough at 1. FSV Mainz 05 before leading Borussia Dortmund to two German championships and the Champions League final. He also made history at Liverpool FC: Under his leadership, the traditional English club won the Champions League and the Premier League, among other titles.
With his emotional style on the sidelines, his offensive "heavy metal football", and his ability to motivate teams to peak performance, Klopp enjoys great respect worldwide.

The DFB associates great hopes with the appointment of the 59-year-old. After the disappointing performance at the World Cup, Klopp is expected to bring the national team a clear game philosophy, stability, and renewed enthusiasm.
Sporting director Rudi Völler expressed his conviction about the personnel decision: Klopp has "deserved the position for many years". Record international player Lothar Matthäus also praised the appointment, highlighting Klopp's charisma, authenticity, and leadership qualities in particular.
