After a long time, George R. R. Martin (77) has posted on his blog again. In his first personal post since February 2026, the author of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" saga, which served as the source material for the hit series "Game of Thrones", reports on difficult months. He writes about sadness and depression, but also about dreams that have come true.
"This year has been... stressful to say the least", Martin reports. "So much has happened that it has been overwhelming. Some great things, exciting things. Dreams that have come true. But there have also been nightmares." The writer has lost several friends and "fought against sadness and depression". Whether there is a diagnosed condition is not known. How he is doing in this regard at the moment is also not clearly apparent.
The "worst" could still lie ahead, he continues. However, Martin does not explain what exactly he means by that. He only writes that he turned 77 last September, "and I tell you: getting old is no fun. But there have also been fantastic moments." His next sentences read quite matter-of-factly: "I suppose that's just how life is. I knew that, of course. If you've read my stories, you know that too."
Emmy Nominations a Highlight for Martin
There is much that Martin could report on and he wants to try to catch up, he announces. He also has help from staff members, but his posts will "probably be short and hasty".
The author writes that one of his personal highlights is the nine Emmy nominations for the "Game of Thrones" spin-off "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms", which is also based on his narratives. He hopes that he can personally attend the television award ceremony in Los Angeles on September 14. However, that depends on many things that he does not specify.
