The green ogre is back: Universal Pictures released the first official trailer for "Shrek 5" on Tuesday - the first film in the franchise since "Für immer Shrek" from 2010. Mike Myers (63), Cameron Diaz (53), and Eddie Murphy (65) once again lend their voices to Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. The film hits theaters on June 30, 2027.

The teaser focuses on the beloved Donkey: Murphy's character enthusiastically monologues about the next adventure - much to Shrek's annoyance. The family moves through a new town, accompanied by the two ogre sons Fergus and Farkle. They are voiced by "Superman" actor Skyler Gisondo (29) and "Saturday Night Live" comedian Marcello Hernández (28). As the trailer reveals, the family also ends up in prison. Perhaps the toughest part is that Donkey belts out the song "Roxanne" by The Police.

Plot Details Are Unknown

Familiar faces also reappear. The Gingerbread Man dances across the screen and a shady snowman bears a suspicious resemblance to Olaf from "Die Eiskönigin". Missing from the trailer is Shrek and Fiona's daughter: This role is reportedly being taken on by Hollywood star Zendaya (29), according to reports.

Not much more is known about the plot so far. The studio officially describes "Shrek 5" merely as "thrilling, magical, and endlessly funny" - a new adventure centered around one of "the most beloved animated heroes of all time".

Familiar Faces Behind the Camera

"Shrek" veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are directing. Vernon, who voices the Gingerbread Man in the franchise, was already part of the directing team for the Oscar-nominated "Shrek 2". Dohrn worked as a writer on the second and third films and was responsible for the story of "Für immer Shrek" - where he also voiced the villain Rumpelstiltskin. Brad Ableson ("Minions") is taking on co-directing duties.

Successful Film Franchise

The track record of the "Shrek" films is impressive: The first "Shrek" won the very first Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2001. It was followed by "Shrek 2" (2004), "Shrek der Dritte" (2007), and "Für immer Shrek" (2010). Together, the four films grossed more than $2.9 billion worldwide. In addition, there's a Broadway musical, a live tour, and attractions at Universal theme parks. Puss in Boots also got his own stage with two spin-offs.
