Earth, Wind & Fire have canceled their performance with Lionel Richie (77) scheduled for Thursday evening (August 6) at the Chase Center in San Francisco. According to the band, the cause was a medical emergency involving one of their members. The concert is to be rescheduled, though a date was not initially confirmed.

The group informed their audience via Instagram, just a few hours before the scheduled show start. "We are unable to perform tonight as planned at the Chase Center in San Francisco because a member of our band experienced a medical emergency," the statement reads. It continues: "Tonight's show with Lionel Richie will therefore be postponed, with a new date to be announced shortly." The band apologized for the unexpected change and expressed gratitude for understanding.

Tickets remain valid

Earth, Wind & Fire did not disclose which band member was affected. The group also provided no details about the nature or severity of the emergency.

The Chase Center also published the statement on its channels and advised ticket buyers to keep their tickets for the rescheduled date. Those who prefer not to can get a refund at the point of purchase.

Richie had to pause himself in June

This is not the first health-related incident on this tour. Just over a month before the San Francisco cancellation, Richie himself had to drop out. During a concert on June 24 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the singer cut his performance short. During "Dancing on the Ceiling," he told the audience he was feeling dizzy. Two additional dates subsequently had to be postponed.

Doctors had advised Richie to rest and only return to performing when fully recovered, according to a statement released by Live Nation Chicago at the time. In Pittsburgh, the 77-year-old was back on stage and addressed concerns about his health head-on. "I scared you for a moment there, didn't I?" the portal TribLive quotes him as saying. He had received plenty of advice from friends over the past 24 hours.

His ex-wife Brenda Harvey Richie (born 1952) had already given the all-clear shortly after the incident. She thanked everyone for their concern, writing on X that Lionel was doing well and would be back on stage.

For Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire, the "Sing A Song All Night Long" tour is already their third joint concert tour in as many years.
