On first dates, people like to fib a little, whether about their salary, their weight, or their last ex. That's exactly where the new dating show Eden - You Pay for Every Lie comes in, where every untruth literally costs participants money. After launching on Joyn on June 25, all 20 episodes are now also being broadcast on free TV: starting Thursday, July 16, at 10:20 PM on ProSieben. Before that, at 8:15 PM, Born Famous - Fluch oder Segen? will also provide new content for reality fans.
What's the show Eden about, which Joyn promoted as probably the most honest dating show of the year? 13 single female and male candidates move into an alleged paradise to find true love there - but under an unusual condition: fibbing is taboo. Anyone who lies not only loses face but also reduces the shared prize pool.
The lie detector has a say
To ensure no one cheats with impunity, the female and male candidates must regularly take a lie detector test. There, they are asked uncomfortable questions such as: Are your feelings genuine?, Did you secretly kiss someone else yesterday?, or Is getting to know each other just a game to you?
This creates a moral dilemma: Anyone who lies to save a budding romance reduces the entire group's pot. Those who stick to the often painful truth, on the other hand, preserve the prize money but risk an immediate end to their date. Only those who show genuine feelings advance in the show.
$100,000 in the pot - $1,000 gone per lie
The show's jackpot contains $100,000. But how much of it remains in the end is only truly determined at the conclusion: $1,000 is deducted for every uncovered lie. This makes Eden not just a dating experiment but also a character test.
The concept is based on an observation that many are likely familiar with. According to a study, about one-third of Germans fib on their first date - whether about their salary, weight, or previous relationships. On Eden, however, every lie is immediately exposed and punished.
