After months of reports, it's now in their own business document: Jim Carrey (64) is taking on a role in the planned live-action adaptation of 'The Jetsons.' Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed this in its quarterly letter to shareholders, which was published on Thursday. The company lists the film among the projects scheduled to be released in theaters after 2027. No release date has been set, and the letter does not specify which role Carrey will play.
Initial hints that Carrey was involved in the project had already emerged in the fall. The trade publication 'Variety' reported in October 2025 that the actor was negotiating for the lead role. Colin Trevorrow (49), who directed 'Jurassic World' (2015) and most recently helmed 'Jurassic World Dominion' (2022), was reportedly in talks to direct. According to reports, he was also negotiating the screenplay together with Joe Epstein. None of this has been confirmed so far: neither Trevorrow nor Epstein appear in the shareholders' letter.
A Family in the Space Age
The source material comes from Hanna-Barbera Studios, founded by animation icons William Hanna (1910-2001) and Joseph Barbera (1911-2006). The duo had already created 'Tom and Jerry' at MGM Studios starting in 1940, and later were also responsible for 'The Flintstones.'
The show centers on George and Jane Jetson with their children Judy and Elroy, plus the robot housekeeper Rosie and the Great Dane Astro. The ABC network aired the series starting on September 23, 1962-it was the network's first program in color.
From Comic Books to the Big Screen
The characters also remained present in TV movies, comic books, and video games. In 1990, 'Jetsons: The Movie' followed, distributed at the time by Universal. George O'Hanlon voiced George Jetson one last time, and Mel Blanc voiced his boss Cosmo Spacely. Both died during production, and the film is dedicated to them.
Warner Bros. already has experience with live-action adaptations from the Hanna-Barbera catalog. 'Scooby-Doo' from 2002 and the sequel 'Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed' from 2004 grossed a combined total of around 457 million dollars worldwide.
Focus on Family Films
For Carrey, the space adventure fits with his recent filmography. Between 2020 and 2024, he appeared as Dr. Robotnik in three 'Sonic' films, and a fourth installment featuring him is announced for 2027.
And another return is in the works: In June, 'The Hollywood Reporter' reported that the actor was negotiating to once again take on the role of the Grinch, which he played in the 2000 Christmas film. Ron Howard (72), who was also in charge back then, is set to direct again and would produce the sequel together with his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer.
