Romantic ice hockey series conquered the hearts of millions of streaming fans this year. After HBO Max and Prime Video celebrated major successes with "Heated Rivalry" and "Off Campus", Netflix is now following suit and announcing "Icebreaker" as the next series romance on ice.
The series is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by English author Hannah Grace. With this, Netflix is also banking on a viral BookTok hit, which spent 70 weeks on the "New York Times" bestseller list and sold nearly five million copies worldwide, as Netflix writes in its own online magazine "Tudum". The novel was translated into 24 languages.
What "Icebreaker" is about
Similar to "Off Campus", "Icebreaker" also takes place at a college. The plot revolves around figure skater Anastasia Allen, who dreams of Olympic gold. But then an ice rink on campus is closed, and her figure skating partner drops out. Completely unexpectedly, Nathan Hawkins, the captain of the ice hockey team, offers himself as a replacement. Anastasia agrees, but her new partner also ignites new feelings in her that she actually doesn't need. After all, she absolutely cannot allow herself to be distracted.
Netflix announced Amanda Lasher as showrunner, who has worked on series like "Gossip Girl" and "Riverdale". Jade Bartlett will be at her side as co-writer. The series is being produced by Unwell Productions under the direction of podcast star Alex Cooper (31), her husband Matt Kaplan (42), and Mina Lefevre.
"Icebreaker" is the first volume of the three-part "Maple Hills" series, which tells two more love stories with ice hockey players. Netflix has not yet announced when the series will start or how many seasons it will ultimately receive. The streaming service is also remaining tight-lipped about the cast so far.
