"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is racing from one box office record to the next. The films about "the friendly neighborhood spider" starring Tom Holland (30) were already extremely popular with superhero fans. This raises the question for many whether Holland will remain loyal to his character.
In an interview with "Variety", Sony Pictures film chief Tom Rothman already commented on a possible fifth solo adventure for Holland: "I love these questions. It's like when a coach wins the Super Bowl, goes to the press conference, and they ask him: 'Are you going to win it again next year?'"
The truth is, according to Rothman, "that we don't know that at this point in time". He could say the following: "I certainly hope so, absolutely. I heard that Tom said at one point that he wants to continue, and we would be very happy if he did."
So Far, There Have Been No Serious Discussions
Rothman also told the "Hollywood Reporter" about Tom Holland's statement at the premiere of "Brand New Day" that he's open to playing Spider-Man again: "I can tell you: When I heard Tom say that, I jumped for joy. I'll just say: Hope springs eternal. I really hope so."
However, he also revealed that so far there have been no serious discussions about Holland's return as Spider-Man for a fifth solo film: "No, not in any concrete form - only as wishful thinking."
"Brand New Day" Breaks Records
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has already broken several records: Just seven days after its release, the film became the highest-grossing title of the 2026 film year so far, as reported by "Variety", among others. The Sony-Marvel title has thus surpassed "Toy Story 5". Previously, "Brand New Day" had already achieved the most successful opening weekend in North America ever.
The new "Spider-Man" film has so far grossed 1.155 billion US dollars worldwide. "Brand New Day" needed six days to cross the billion-dollar mark. Only the finale of the first "Avengers" series, the 2019 film "Endgame", has done it faster. That film grossed a billion dollars after five days and consequently still holds the lead.
