Spain is world champion, and Donald Trump (80) was there. However, this is barely recognizable in the photos that the soccer world governing body FIFA distributed after the final on its official X account. The victory photo shows the Spanish players jumping into the air with the trophy after their 1-0 overtime victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Of the US President, who stood on stage next to the celebrating team, only the corner of a navy blue suit remains visible in one edge.

What cannot be seen in the pictures: FIFA President Gianni Infantino (56) rushed across the stage during the ceremony to usher Trump out of the frame.

The Spanish national team proceeded similarly to FIFA on their own channels. A celebration photo on Instagram does without Trump, as does a post with 20 images showing the players lifting the trophy one after another.

Boos During the Medal Ceremony

Even before the photos, the audience had made clear what it thought of Trump's appearance. When the US President came onto the field together with the FIFA President to present the medals to the players, boos echoed through the stadium. Trump waved toward the stands while spectators made their displeasure heard.

Trump's Relationship with FIFA

Trump's relationship with FIFA has been causing discussions for some time. In July 2025, he presented the medals to FC Chelsea at the first Club World Cup in the new 32-team format and subsequently left the field with one of the awards.

At that awards ceremony as well, Trump had not vacated his place voluntarily: He remained standing among the FC Chelsea professionals, who then appeared visibly irritated. During the ongoing tournament, he also personally called Infantino and requested a review of the red card and suspension for US striker Folarin Balogun (25) in the round of 16.

Trump Wants Even More World Cups

Before the final, the President announced in an interview with "FOX" that he wanted to bring the World Cup back to the USA immediately. "Based on the numbers, we will apply for it right away," Trump said. "We need to do this again, and again, as long as I'm here, you hear that, Gianni?"

The plan is not realistic. The 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco - on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup (1930), one opening match each will also take place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. The 2034 World Cup will be hosted by Saudi Arabia. The USA could therefore host again at the earliest in 2038.
