As the distinctive voice and lyricist of R.E.M., Michael Stipe was one of the defining figures of alternative rock. With hits like “Losing My Religion” and “Everybody Hurts,” the band sold more than 90 million albums worldwide. Since R.E.M. disbanded, the musician has devoted himself mainly to visual art and photography.
