After a lengthy conflict over the 1975 film Falsche Bewegung, director Wim Wenders (80) and actress Nastassja Kinski (65) have reached an agreement. A statement announces that the matter has been resolved.
The reason for the dispute was a scene with Kinski without clothing on top, who was only 13 years old at the time of filming and had wanted the scene removed for a long time. After it was already announced that the film would be taken off the market for the time being, a joint statement by both parties has now been published.
Apologized to Nastassja Kinski
On the website of the Wim Wenders Foundation, a joint statement reads: "We have resolved our disputes in connection with the film 'Falsche Bewegung.'" The director has accordingly "apologized to Nastassja Kinski and has complied with her wish to cut the scene she objected to from the film." It is further announced that Kinski and Wenders are united by the desire "that the memory of the film will no longer be overshadowed by this conflict in the future and that the long-standing friendly relationship will also be restored."
In the disputed scene, Kinski is shown without clothing on top. According to her own statements in conversation with SZ in May, the actress felt uncomfortable even during filming. She had been trying to have the scene removed for 15 years. Even back then as a child, she had "noticed that it wasn't right." Wenders had been her first director, and he had "not protected" her.
The relevant scene has been cut without replacement
In early June, it was announced that the film would be withdrawn from current distribution formats. Streaming, TV, and distribution partners were instructed to no longer make Falsche Bewegung publicly accessible. Wenders declared "that Nastassja Kinski should have been better protected back then." For this, he apologized "without ifs and buts."
In a statement published about a week ago, Wenders explained: "I take Nastassja Kinski's current perspective seriously. She looks back on an experience she had as a thirteen-year-old and which burdens her. I have apologized to her for this." The foundation has withdrawn the film from distribution. He as director has decided: "The relevant scene has been cut without replacement and will no longer be part of the film in the future." Wenders deleted the scene as an expression of a "changed perspective and out of respect for Nastassja Kinski." The new edited version was also made available to Kinski for viewing.
