The animated original from 2016 and the 2024 sequel were huge successes. However, the live-action version of "Vaiana" falls significantly short of expectations at launch. The remake featuring Dwayne Johnson (54) as the demigod Maui earned only 43 million dollars during its first weekend in North America, according to media reports. Early industry forecasts had predicted around 85 million dollars. Shortly before the launch, Disney itself only expected revenues of 60 to 65 million dollars.
Despite the weak result, "Vaiana" secured the number one spot on the North American box office charts. However, the film could still become a financial problem for Disney. Production costs alone are estimated at around 250 million US dollars, with additional marketing expenses not yet included.
Strong Competition in Theaters
Even outside North America, "Vaiana" is falling short of expectations. The film earned an additional 52 million dollars in international markets, bringing the worldwide total to approximately 95 million dollars.
As a possible reason for the weak start, industry experts cite the short time gap since the animated predecessor. It may still be too early for a genuine nostalgia effect. Additionally, "Vaiana" is competing with films like "Toy Story 5" and "Minions & Monster" for young moviegoers.
Dwayne Johnson portrays the demigod Maui in the live-action version, a role he already voiced in the animated films. The title role is taken by Catherine Laga'aia (19), whose character is called Moana in the original. This marks the Australian actress's film debut.
