Robert Thurman (1941-2026), a U.S. Buddhist scholar and the father of actress Uma Thurman (56), has passed away at the age of 84. His death was announced through Tibet House US, the cultural center he co-founded. In a statement on Instagram, the nonprofit organization paid tribute to the deceased: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Robert A. F. Thurman, a distinguished American Buddhist scholar, co-founder of Tibet House US, author and translator whose teachings have touched countless lives, passed away on Tuesday morning, June 16th, in Woodstock, New York."

Dalai Lama Issues Statement

In the statement, the Thurman family also requests privacy. The post additionally mentions the well-known mantra of Tibetan Buddhism, "Om Mani Padme Hum", which can be roughly translated as "the jewel in the lotus". The Dalai Lama also commented on Thurman's death. In a statement published by Tibet House US on Instagram, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism expressed his sympathy to the Thurman family. "Dear Nena and family, it is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of your husband and my dear friend, Prof. Robert Thurman. Please accept my sincere condolences. My prayers are with you and all members of your family", the statement reads.

He Advocated for Tibetan Culture

Robert Thurman taught for over three decades as a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at the Department of Religion at Columbia University, according to information on his website.

The "New York Times" described him as one of the leading American experts on Tibetan Buddhism, and "Time" magazine named him one of the 25 most influential people in America in 1997. With Tibet House US, Thurman also founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Tibetan culture.
