Tom Kaulitz (36) is a guest on the new episode of the MagentaTV original "Bestbesetzung" with Johannes B. Kerner (61). The conversation with the musician was recorded above the rooftops of New York in MagentaTV's World Cup studio.
There, Kaulitz talks about, among other things, the return of "Wetten, dass..?". On December 5, he and his brother Bill are bringing back the legendary ZDF Saturday evening show - although apparently only for one night. As Tom Kaulitz reveals, it should remain this one-time hosting appearance.
Looking at the big task, Kaulitz appears relaxed. When asked about the preparation, he and his brother have so far always answered: "Not at all yet. We like to do things from the gut, but also because we have each other." It's precisely this familiarity that seems to give him security: Without Bill, he would be significantly more nervous, explains the Tokio Hotel musician, who was deployed as a fan expert for MagentaTV during the World Cup.
They don't want to dedicate themselves only to "Wetten, dass..?"
Of course there's "enormous pressure" on them. "But what could really happen, except that we stumble over our words a few times and somehow misspeak and people say afterwards: 'Well, they were pretty nervous and Thomas Gottschalk did it better.'" The expectations regarding ratings are also high: "I think we should get at least 40 percent." For him and his brother, however, less depends on it than for other hosts. The engagement should also remain a one-time event. They told the ZDF executives: "Folks, let us do one show, because we also want to continue touring and dedicate ourselves to other things."
With his twin brother Bill, Kaulitz has long been successful not only as a musician, but also in the entertainment and podcast sectors. Nevertheless, he sees the priorities clearly: "We're doing a lot of entertainment now, of course, and trying out a lot, and it's fun too, but at the end of the day we're musicians." Tokio Hotel is "still us four guys from Magdeburg". Being pleasing at any price is not his aspiration. "There should of course also be people who don't like it and are bothered by it. Art should always be a bit abrasive. I think that's totally important", says the guitarist. "Our goal is not to be everybody's darling and I think we're far from that."
Insights into life with Heidi Klum in Los Angeles
Tom Kaulitz also attracts attention with his private life, after all he has been married to Heidi Klum (53) since 2019 and lives with her in Los Angeles. "Bill lives 15 minutes away and basically our whole life takes place between our two houses and in the garden", he gives insights into everyday life. For him, a perfect Sunday includes getting up at six in the morning and watching the games of his favorite club FC Bayern Munich: "She watches soccer with me in bed in the morning."
Kaulitz also looks back on the getting-to-know-you phase with the model. "With Heidi and me it really was from zero to sixty. We met and it felt like two weeks later we moved in together. A year later we got married." When proposing, it was important to him to include Klum's four children: "That was at Christmas. We prepared breakfast, then I gathered everyone together and put the ring on the tray. It was totally beautiful and a big surprise."
When asked if he sees himself as a father figure, the 36-year-old explains: "I grew up with a stepfather myself and know what it's like." As a child and teenager, you "don't really want to hear from a father figure, but rather have a male figure from whom you can pick up one or two tips and who you especially like. That was the main task and that was my attempt."
