Despite the wonderful weather and recently struggling superheroes at the box office: Tom Holland (30) is currently drawing people to cinemas around the globe with his new film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day". The film has already earned over a billion US dollars, even though Holland's fourth solo film as the friendly neighborhood spider only premiered last week.
"Brand New Day" consequently took only six days to crack the billion-dollar mark. Only his superhero colleagues managed this feat a bit faster...
"The Odyssey" narrowly misses the top 10
It's already certain: Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" didn't make the top 10. Currently (as of August 5), the elaborate journey of Matt Damon is still a few million short of the billion-dollar sound barrier after 20 days in theaters - also because the official release in China hasn't happened yet. Once that occurs, the magic hurdle will easily be cleared.
Tied in ninth and tenth place remain the animated film "Zoomania 2" and the action flick "Fast & Furious 7". Both films, albeit ten years apart, reached the billion-dollar threshold after 17 days.
"Avatar: The Way of Water" in eighth place needed exactly two weeks to do so. Its predecessor took 17 days, while its successor "Avatar: Fire and Ash" required 18 days. Late 2029 or early 2030 will reveal where the fourth installment ranks in this regard - the release date is currently scheduled for December 19.
Dinosaurs, Jedi and an old acquaintance
In seventh place, the dinosaurs from "Jurassic World" have firmly planted themselves. The opening of the new trilogy, which came to theaters in 2015, was already a billion-dollar hit after 13 days.
Three films are tied for fourth place, including a familiar face: Tom Holland. With his previous "Spider-Man" adventure "No Way Home", he already stormed the cinemas in record time. With strong multiverse support from his two spider colleagues Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, he swung his way to a billion dollars within twelve days in 2021. Six years earlier, the "Star Wars" return "The Force Awakens" had also required a dozen days to do so.
Most Western moviegoers won't have the third film in fourth place on their radar. The animated film "Ne Zha 2" earned a large portion of its total of around 2.3 billion US dollars in its home country of China. And yet it had already raked in the first billion after twelve days. In the ranking of the most successful box office hits of all time, "Ne Zha 2" even ranks ahead of films like "Titanic" or "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".
The top 3 is firmly in superhero hands
Which brings us to the top 3. Unsurprisingly, this is entirely in superhero hands. "Avengers: Infinity War" took its time with 11 days in 2018 to be admitted to the billion-dollar club.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has now clearly beaten this number and relegated the "Infinity War" colleagues to third place just six days after its theatrical release.
Iron Man, Thor and Co. shouldn't be too upset about this though, because: The finale of the first "Avengers" series, the 2019 film "Endgame", earned a billion dollars after just five days and thus still has the lead. This milestone is even documented in the "Guinness Book of Records". In order to claim this benchmark all for himself as well, Tom Holland will have to spin his cinema webs a bit faster at his next appearance as Spider-Man.
