More than 1.4 million tickets sold in five days, over 17.6 million euros at the box office: "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has achieved the strongest opening of the year in German theaters. This was announced by distributor Sony Pictures. No other film has had a better five-day opening in the current decade, and even within the "Spider-Man" series, the adventure with Tom Holland (30) has reached the top in terms of box office revenue. The film has been running in Germany since July 29.
Worldwide, the sequel earned a total of $927 million at its opening weekend, making it the second-best global theater launch. Only "Avengers: Endgame" and its $1.2 billion from 2019 were more successful. In North America, the new "Spider-Man" film became the second film in history to surpass $300 million in a single weekend with approximately $355 million.
Records at Theater Launch
The Thursday previews alone brought in $72 million in North America, surpassing the previous record held by "Endgame" ($60 million). Friday followed with $168 million, also a record, and Saturday with $101.5 million. "To be completely honest: It feels fantastic", Sony film chief Tom Rothman told the "Hollywood Reporter".
The formula for success is relatively simple: "You just have to make a really, really good film." Add to that the fact that there hasn't been a new "Spider-Man" film for five years. "Scarcity has value."
Following the events of "Spider-Man: No Way Home", Peter Parker fights crime in "Brand New Day" in a world where no one knows him anymore. His former friends simply continue their lives without him. Completely on his own, he must fight against an invisible villain.
Alongside Holland, his wife Zendaya returns as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, plus Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Destin Daniel Cretton directed. The production budget was approximately $225 million.
