The 2026 World Cup has been decided, with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final. During the subsequent analysis on MagentaTV, a prominent surprise guest appeared: Robbie Williams (52), who had performed the official FIFA anthem "Desire" in the stadium before the final in New Jersey with Nicole Scherzinger and Laura Pausini, joined moderators Johannes B. Kerner and Laura Wontorra as well as experts Tabea Kemme, Mats Hummels, Thomas Müller and Jürgen Klopp - and wanted to get the latter to commit to the job as German national team coach.
First, Klopp greeted the pop legend with a remark that made Müller and Hummels laugh: "The last time I met him, he was only wearing underwear." The 59-year-old didn't provide any details about this encounter. Instead, Williams, who is a devoted soccer fan, took the opportunity to put Klopp on the spot. "I heard that you're very happy with your job. Would you also accept another job?" Klopp asked back which one the singer meant.
Williams became more specific: "Listen, I know that the German national team needs a new coach. A charismatic leader who is a winner." But Jürgen Klopp didn't take the bait and merely explained: "It's heading in the right direction. We're in talks, but I didn't have time to finalize it." After all, he had been busy as a World Cup expert. He emphasized twice afterward that nothing has been signed yet. Since January 2025, Klopp has been "Global Head of Soccer" at Red Bull and is contractually bound until 2029.
Klopp himself had confirmed shortly before kickoff of the final that he had reached an agreement with Red Bull. However, it's not yet finalized. As of now, the presentation at the DFB is scheduled for Friday. The supervisory board and the shareholders' meeting still have to approve the appointment beforehand, and DFB President Bernd Neuendorf is expected to invite the officials to a digital conference soon.
A declaration of admiration as farewell
When Thomas Müller interjected that Jürgen Klopp had worked in England for a long time and thus knew the problems there, the British Williams responded on MagentaTV with a compliment: "In England, he's the only one who doesn't have a problem. We love him!" As a farewell, the singer wished the 59-year-old all the best.
