Lionel Messi (39) has broken his silence. The day after the lost World Cup final against Spain, the Argentine superstar spoke out on Instagram. The 39-year-old talks in the post about his feelings in light of the defeat on football's biggest stage, but also finds conciliatory words for his team and his country.

"The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I also hold on to all the good things...", Messi says according to the translation accompanying an image showing him with the World Cup runner-up silver medal after the final whistle. The Argentine captain thinks of all his team's successful comebacks during the tournament, trying to focus his view on the positive. "The games we turned around by giving everything - games that will stay with us forever", he notes.
The "Flea" further emphasizes the "support of an entire country, which - together with the hard work and dedication of this group - made us the best in the world once again". Despite the pain of defeat, Messi notes that he and his team have "reached two World Cup finals in a row".

Messi explicitly thanked everyone for every greeting and message that reached him in the post. Once again, they managed to come together as a nation and share the immense pride of being Argentine. In closing, the father of three sent a message to the opponent: he wanted to congratulate Spain on winning the title.
It was Messi's third World Cup final and his second defeat - after the 0-1 loss in extra time against Germany in 2014 - as well as the sixth World Cup for the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner. Whether a seventh will follow, Messi leaves open for now in the current post.
