Richard Gere (76) is back in front of the camera for another grand love story. First photos from the filming of "Asymmetry" in New York show the Hollywood star arm in arm with his co-star Diana Silvers (28), holding hands and kissing. Additional photos show them sitting close together on a park bench.

The film is based on Lisa Halliday's 2018 novel "Asymmetry". Edward Zwick directs, having written the screenplay together with Halliday and Marshall Herskovitz. Gere plays Ezra, a 70-year-old world-renowned writer who one day encounters young publishing assistant Alice in Central Park.

A Moment of Eye Contact and Its Consequences

According to the official plot summary published by "Deadline", a single moment of eye contact ignites a connection that changes both their lives. They create a private world with room for only two. Ezra, known for his daring work, finally finds someone he can be vulnerable with. Alice, in turn, finds the courage to pursue her own ambitions as a writer. Everything is thrown into turmoil when their secret relationship is exposed.

For Halliday, the film adaptation is clearly a passion project. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with Zwick and Herskovitz to bring Alice and Ezra's story to the screen, she explained in a press release quoted by "People". She is extraordinarily grateful to them for their humor, their ingenuity, their courage, and their dedication.

A Book with Prominent Advocates

The material comes to the screen with considerable acclaim. "The New Yorker" called Halliday's debut a literary phenomenon, and "The New York Times" included it in a list of 15 notable books by women shaping the writing and reading of literature in the 21st century. Former U.S. President Barack Obama (64) also placed the novel on his personal best-of list for 2018.

Zwick has his own connection to the book. He was enchanted by Halliday's novel, the director said, not only because it's emotional, intelligent, and very funny. Rather, it's about two people who discover that what the world calls asymmetry can also go by another name: love.

The Return of a Hollywood Veteran

For Zwick, "Asymmetry" is his first directing job in eight years. The Oscar winner once produced "Shakespeare in Love" and directed films like "Legenden der Leidenschaft", "Last Samurai", "Blood Diamond", and "Jack Reacher: Kein Weg zurück".

The casting was announced in early May, shortly before the film market in Cannes.

What Attracts the Producers to the Project

Stacey Snider, Chief Creative Officer at FilmNation Entertainment, and Clay Pecorin, co-founder and partner at Rainmaker Films, describe "Asymmetry" as an unconventional love story. The film tells of an unlikely connection between two people in completely different stages of life, thereby challenging notions of love and power that both the characters and the audience carry with them.

A release date for "Asymmetry" has not yet been announced; filming is currently underway in New York City.
