The revival of "Club der roten Bänder" has a premiere date. Starting August 25, RTL+, Sky and Wow will release new double episodes of the series "Club der roten Bänder - Die neue Generation" weekly. On free TV, VOX follows on September 8, airing the episodes on Tuesdays at 8:15 PM, also as double episodes. RTL announced this.
The series tells a standalone story but maintains the basic principle of the original. The focus is once again on a group of teenagers whose paths cross in the hallways of a hospital. The chance encounter becomes a friendship that means more to everyone involved than a temporary community of convenience.
Five teenagers, five challenges
The characters' starting situations are different. A surgery that could cost one's eyesight is at stake, as is a life that isn't possible without dialysis. Added to this are bipolar disorder, leukemia, and anxiety accompanied by fear of losing control. According to the network, the series addresses these topics with a contemporary perspective on growing up. Tension is created by a decision one of the teenagers makes during the course of the story that changes the group's everyday life.
The five main roles are played by Yoran Leicher, Mariama Jobe, Voicu Dumitraş, Greta Krämer and Jona Levin Nicolai. They give the new club its face, replacing an ensemble that shaped the series between 2015 and 2017.
Behind the camera, the network relies on a mix of continuity and new additions. Producer Gerda Müller is once again in charge of the series with Bantry Bay Productions. Directors are Felix Binder, who was already involved in the series and film, and Aki Wegner, known for "Tonis Welt". The script comes from head writer Adrian Spring and writer Kirsten Loose.
A returning member of the production team
In addition to producer Lisa Bayer, Nick Julius Schuck is also part of the team, this time as junior producer. In the original series, he was part of the club as the character Hugo. The original became a huge success for VOX starting in 2015. After three seasons through 2017, the prequel "Club der roten Bänder - Wie alles begann" came to theaters in 2019. In 2021, the TV spin-off "Tonis Welt" followed.
The production was honored with awards including the International Emmy Kids Award, the German Television Award, the Grimme Award, the Bavarian Television Award and the Jupiter Award. The template was provided by Spanish author Albert Espinosa with his autobiographically influenced series "Polseres vermelles". Espinosa processed his own experiences from long hospital stays in it.
Anyone who wants to revisit the original before the new launch can find all three seasons on RTL+. Starting August 25, they will also be available on Sky and Wow.
