When the World Equestrian Championships begin in Aachen on August 11, the starting signal will come from a future queen: Crown Princess Amalia of the Netherlands (22) will open the FEI World Championships at Allianz Park in Aachen's Soers district. Now it has also been confirmed that she won't be the only royal at the event.
A key role in the opening show with more than 250 horses will be taken by Zara Tindall (45), niece of King Charles III (77), according to "Hello!". At the 2006 World Equestrian Games, she won gold in eventing-right here in Aachen.
Spanish Infanta Elena (62), sister of King Felipe (58), is also traveling to the Rhineland. The Duchess of Lugo will watch the proceedings as a guest of honor from the stands. She too has been considered a passionate rider since her youth and competed in national and international tournaments for years.
Carriages from three royal stables
All three women are connected by equestrian sports across generations and royal houses. Amalia herself has been in the saddle since she was four years old and also competed in tournaments with her horse Mojito. In June 2025, the heir to the throne fell during a ride and had to undergo surgery. On August 11, she will now experience the sport from the other side, as the royal house announced in mid-July. It is the next important solo engagement for the eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, who is taking on more and more responsibilities.
The World Championships run until August 23. Titles will be awarded in all six disciplines: dressage, eventing, driving, para-dressage, jumping, and vaulting. Under the motto "Welcome Home", a parade of nations is planned for the opening, where riders will pass through the stands and get close to the audience. There will also be displays featuring several hundred horses, live music, and an elaborate audiovisual production.
The highlight will be a gala featuring historic carriages. The royal stables of the Netherlands, Denmark, and Great Britain are sending vehicles to Aachen for this purpose.
