King Charles (77) will surely be seen in his kilt again this year during his Scottish summer vacation. The monarch has been wearing the traditional outfits since childhood, which is probably the reason he moves so naturally in them.
Throughout his life, the British King has been photographed in a kilt at both private and public events. According to media reports, Charles wore a kilt as early as age seven. Early family portraits with his first wife Princess Diana (1961-1997) also show him wearing a kilt. He has also been photographed in a kilt alongside his current wife Queen Camilla (79). Many of the images of King Charles wearing the traditional garment were taken at Balmoral. The royal family traditionally spends their summer at the estate.
On the occasion of his coronation in May 2023, King Charles received a tartan kilt specially designed for the occasion. The garment is meant to symbolize the King's longstanding support for Scottish culture and dress.
The magazine "Town & Country" once speculated that for Charles, the kilt might be more than just a symbol of his close connection to Scotland. It could be the perfect outfit for him in moments when he is happiest. Balmoral is considered his private retreat. He wears the kilt there at leisure events and family celebrations.
Prince William has kept away from the kilt so far
However, Charles apparently has not passed on his love of the kilt to his successor. Heir to the throne Prince William (44) does not seem to be a fan of the kilt, even when visiting Scotland. William's reluctance has prompted a statement from the King's Scottish tailor, John Sugden, in the past.
The designer said according to "Express": "We would be happy to tailor a kilt for the Prince of Wales should the opportunity arise. His father very much enjoys wearing Highland dress and is a great champion of Scottish traditions."
Why William avoids the kilt is not known. He did not choose the special outfit at his wedding to Princess Kate (44) or at his father's coronation. Even at his graduation ceremony at the Scottish university St Andrews, he decided against the kilt. However, whether he will stick to his reluctant attitude is doubtful. Royal experts apparently find it hard to imagine that William would one day come to Scotland as King without presenting a kilt.
