At the traditional Victoria Day on the Swedish island of Öland, it wasn't just birthday girl Crown Princess Victoria (49) who drew attention this year. Prince Julian (5), the youngest son of Prince Carl Philip (47) and Princess Sofia (41), also caused concerned looks - the little royal appeared with a cast on his left forearm.
In a group photo published by the palace on Wednesday, a blue plaster cast could clearly be seen under Julian's green jacket. Despite the injury, the five-year-old didn't let it dampen his spirits and smiled for the cameras.
Swedish Court Gives the All-Clear
Following speculation about the injury, the Swedish court has now spoken out. Court information chief Margareta Thorgren explained to the Swedish magazine "Svensk Damtidning" that Prince Julian had sustained a small broken arm.
When asked how the accident occurred, Thorgren gave the all-clear: "He has a small break in his arm." There's nothing more to it. The cause was hardly spectacular: "Children and playing - these things can happen."
The Royals Celebrate Victoria's Day of Honor
Victoria Day is one of the most important dates in the Swedish royal family's calendar. Every year, Crown Princess Victoria celebrates her birthday on the island of Öland, where the royals traditionally spend the summer.
In addition to Victoria, her husband Prince Daniel (52) and their children, King Carl XVI Gustaf (80), Queen Silvia (82), as well as Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia with their four children also attended the celebrations.
Tradition with Carriage Ride and Sports Award
Victoria Day was celebrated throughout Sweden and broadcast live on television. Traditionally, Crown Princess Victoria is greeted in front of Solliden Palace by a choir and numerous fans with a birthday serenade before she rides through Borgholm in a carriage.
In the evening, the prestigious Victoria Prize was also awarded to a Swedish sports personality. This year, cross-country skier Frida Karlsson was honored with the award before the traditional Victoria concert with performances by Swedish music stars rounded off the festive day.
