Prince Daniel (52) and his son Prince Oscar (10) personally cheered on Sweden at the World Cup. The husband of Crown Princess Victoria (48) and their son traveled to the USA to support the national team in the round of 16 against France. The duo watched the match on June 30 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. For the Swedish team, the tournament ended that evening: Against top favorite France, the team, which entered as an underdog, lost 0-3 and was eliminated.

The fact that Prince Daniel and Prince Oscar showed up at the stadium was surprising. As recently as June 18, the Royal Court's press office had emphasized to SVT Sport that the royal couple would not be coming, and that they also had no further information about private trips by family members.

With the advance to the round of 16, plans apparently changed at short notice. Father and son were accompanied by an official delegation. The princes are present in the USA accompanied by Swedish Ambassador Urban Ahlin as well as Erik Ullenhag, Consul General in New York, and Anna Hammarlund Blixt, Consul General in Texas, the palace subsequently informed SVT Sport about the spontaneous appearance. The Swedish Royal House posted a photo of the two on Instagram at the sidelines. Prince Daniel appeared in a dark suit with a tie, while Prince Oscar posed in the national team's yellow jersey.

Prince Daniel is considered extremely enthusiastic about sports and passes this passion on to his children. At the Winter Olympics in February of this year, Daniel attended a hockey game at the stadium with his children.

Numerous Royals at the World Cup

Sweden thus joins a whole series of royal World Cup visits. Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus from Norway already watched their country's match against Senegal at MetLife Stadium. Their father, Crown Prince Haakon, had canceled his planned attendance at short notice after his wife Princess Mette-Marit received a new lung.

Other royal houses also watched eagerly: Spain's King Felipe traveled to Guadalajara for the match against Uruguay at the personal invitation of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The Dutch royals King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima saw two matches in a single day - first the Netherlands against Sweden in Houston, then Curaçao against Ecuador in Kansas City. The Jordanian royal family around King Abdullah II, in turn, accompanied their team during its first World Cup participation.
