16 years of marriage, a first meeting that took place 33 years ago - and yet Penélope Cruz (52) says she still hasn't learned everything. In an interview with the US magazine "People", the Spanish actress spoke about her relationship with husband Javier Bardem (57).
She keeps discovering new sides to her husband
"I feel like I'm still learning, you know?", Cruz said about her relationship. "And I'm with someone I've known for 33 years." Even after such a long time, no one is ever completely known: "I really know this person well, but is there a day when you truly know yourself? No. It's the same with your partner."
Cruz didn't come to these thoughts randomly: She shared them as part of promoting her new romantic comedy "The Invite", directed by Olivia Wilde. The film revolves around the dynamics of two couples at a dinner party. That's exactly what makes the story so relatable, the 52-year-old believes - after all, many people keep discovering new sides to their partners, no matter how long they've been together.
First colleagues, then a couple
It took a long time before Cruz and Bardem became a couple. The two first met in 1992 on the set of the Spanish dark comedy "Jamón Jamón". There was an "obvious" chemistry, Bardem later recalled in an interview with "GQ", but "nothing" happened. "Neither of us would make the first move", the actor said.
It wasn't until 2008 that things progressed when both stood in front of the camera again for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". Two years later, in July 2010, Cruz and Bardem married in an intimate ceremony in the Bahamas. Their son Leo was born in early 2011, followed by daughter Luna in 2013.
