Although the reunion on the field had to be canceled at short notice - fans still got a special moment. Soccer player Thomas Müller (36) posted a photo together on Instagram with his colleague Robert Lewandowski (37) and wrote in English: "Not quite the meeting we hoped for, but still had fun. Always a pleasure Robert Lewandowski - see you in October!!!" A sunglasses, fist and heart emoji completed the post.

Rescheduled date due to poor air quality

Müller and Lewandowski were actually supposed to face each other as opponents in North American MLS for the first time. But just hours before kickoff, the match between Vancouver Whitecaps (Müller) and Chicago Fire - where Lewandowski transferred this summer from Barcelona - was canceled.

The reason was poor air quality in the greater Chicago area, caused by wildfires in the region. For safety reasons, the league and authorities decided to postpone the game. The makeup date is already scheduled for October 6.

Nice to see you, Thomas

Even though the athletic showdown has to wait, the two didn't miss the opportunity to meet in person. Polish-born Lewandowski also responded with humor and commented on their reunion in English with a wink: "What a game today! Nice to see you Thomas." With that, the two former FC Bayern stars generated plenty of positive reactions on social media even without kickoff.

On Müller's account, the photo had been liked more than 472,000 times as of Saturday afternoon, on Lewandowski's Insta page more than 877,000 times. And in the comments, fans are going wild in English and German: "Two legends", one can read, or: "Two championship machines", "The best duo" and "Iconic duo".

Müller and Lewandowski: club teammates for years

Müller and Lewandowski share far more than just mutual respect. Between 2014 and 2022, they played together for FC Bayern Munich and formed one of Europe's most successful offensive duos. Together they won multiple German championships, the DFB Cup, and the Champions League in 2020, among other titles. Müller assisted numerous goals by the Polish striker, while Lewandowski regularly set records with his scoring.
