Görel Hanser (1949-2026), the woman behind the scenes of the greatest Swedish pop phenomenon of all time, has passed away. She was 78 years old. ABBA - Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad - announced the death of their closest companion themselves on Instagram.

"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Görel Hanser. We have lost our dearest friend and closest colleague. The loss is immeasurable", the four band members wrote in their joint post. Rarely have ABBA addressed the public with such personal words - a sign of how significant Hanser was to the group. Nothing is known yet about the circumstances of her death.

From the Background to the Foreground

Görel Hanser's story with ABBA began long before the band's actual fame. In the 1960s, she first appeared as an assistant to Stig Anderson (1931-1997), the manager who played a decisive role in shaping ABBA's career in the early years. When the group ended their collaboration with Anderson in the early 1980s, their professional paths also separated - but not those with Hanser.

She stayed and became the manager and central figure in the far-reaching business empire that the four members built around their various projects. What Anderson once began, Hanser continued with her own signature - discreet, loyal and apparently indispensable.

Husband Also in the ABBA Universe

Görel Hanser was married to photographer Anders Hanser (80), who is also closely connected to the band. Numerous iconic ABBA photographs from the 1970s were taken by him.

A black-and-white photo that he took of his wife is attached to the Instagram post. In the comments, many of the 2.1 million followers are saying their goodbyes.
