After nine years, it's over: Maria Wedig (42) is leaving the RTL daily soap 'Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten' (also on RTL+). As RTL announces in a statement, the actress will say goodbye to her role as Nina, which she has portrayed since 2017, on August 13, 2026, in episode 8,585.
It all started in episode 6,311 when Nina first set foot in the Berlin neighborhood. What followed was a long journey through great loves, family happiness, and heavy blows of fate. Now Nina's story gets a dramatically final ending.
Attention, spoilers! Nina's confession changes everything
The turning point comes in episode 8,573, titled 'Soziale Ader,' which airs on July 28. In it, Nina turns herself in to the police, makes a comprehensive confession, and takes responsibility for the murders of Zoe and Carlos. She faces a long prison sentence. For her daughter Toni, however, an entire world collapses, as a blood test had previously given her the certainty that she is not Nina's biological daughter.
The series traces over weeks how it could have come to this. 'Triggered by the traumatic experiences of domestic violence, fear, and the desperate desire to protect her family, Nina ultimately spirals deeper into a cycle of blackmail, guilt, and fateful decisions,' the network explains. Her confession is ultimately much more than solving a criminal case. 'It is the conclusion of a tragic story about violence, trauma, responsibility, and the consequences of disastrous decisions.'
Producer praises Wedig's intensity
The departure leaves its mark on those responsible. 'We ventured into something new with this complex story, which demanded a lot from everyone involved,' Katja Bäuerle, producer of 'GZSZ' at UFA Serial Drama, is quoted in the statement. 'And this story would not have become so emotional and at the same time so thrilling if Maria had not given her role Nina, in her last, very special act at 'GZSZ,' this substance, intensity, and absolute authenticity that touched all of us here on set just as deeply as hopefully our viewers too.' The editorial team also thanked the actress for nine years together and wishes her all the best for the future.
How the farewell story unfolds
Already in the days before the confession, the situation escalates. Toni wants to understand why her mother became a murderer and conducts her own investigations while Nina stubbornly remains silent. With further lies, Nina tries to hide the truth about Toni's origins, but the plan fails. After a breakdown and a hospital stay, Nina finally decides not to hide anything from her daughter anymore. This is followed by going to the police.
