Even though the 2026 World Cup is currently taking place in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, Lothar Matthäus (65) has taken time for a different sport. Together with his partner Theresa, the German soccer icon attended the decisive final game of the Basketball Bundesliga between Alba Berlin and Bayern Munich on Sunday.
They watched the dramatic final at the SAP Garden in the Bavarian capital. In photos showing the two at the arena, the couple appears visibly in good spirits. The final result probably didn't please Matthäus, who is also known as a TV expert, since the former soccer player is also a legend of FC Bayern.
Matthäus and his partner were already present at the opening of the finals, among other times. In the audience sat a current Bayern star: the injured Lennart Karl (18). Although he was supposed to play for Germany at the World Cup, he had suffered a torn muscle fiber in his left thigh. Therefore, Karl cannot participate in the tournament. Shortly before the start of the World Cup, Assan Ouédraogo (20) was nominated as a replacement for the injured player.
Incredible Comeback by Alba Berlin
At the SAP Garden, all those present witnessed a comeback by Alba Berlin. The team was down by 20 points at one point. In the end, Alba narrowly defeated FC Bayern's basketball division 84-81. This allowed Berlin to secure the championship title for the first time since 2022. For Munich, it would have been their third consecutive title.
