A setback for the God of War: The planned series adaptation of the popular video game franchise "God of War" has lost its lead actor. Multiple U.S. industry media outlets are reporting this unanimously. Ryan Hurst (50), known from "Sons of Anarchy", who was supposed to play the main character Kratos, has dropped out due to injury.
Hurst is said to have been injured back in June, reports "Variety". According to what both the magazine "The Hollywood Reporter" and the portal "Deadline" claim to have learned, the actor allegedly "tore his bicep" while filming during a stunt. He has reportedly already undergone surgery and is currently recovering from the procedure. Hurst himself has not confirmed this so far. Amazon's streaming service Prime Video, through which the series is to be released, reportedly declined to comment on the matter.
Delays Expected Due to Absence
As a result of the injury, there will reportedly be significant delays in production. The rest of the cast and crew were informed on Thursday that a new Kratos needs to be cast. According to "Variety", scenes that have already been filmed will now have to be recorded again with a different actor alongside Callum Vinson, who portrays Kratos' son Atreus. Amazon reportedly hopes that production can be fully up and running again by mid-fall. The cast includes, among others, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Max Parker as Heimdall.
The story of the series is said to follow the two most recently released games in the franchise. In June, the new installment "God of War Laufey" was announced, which focuses on Faye, portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus. When the video game will be released is not yet known. It is also unclear whether its plot could also affect the series.
Spoiler warning: In the upcoming installment "Laufey", Faye fights her way through the afterlife according to the announcement. In "God of War" from 2018, the penultimate title in the series so far, she is already dead. In the series, Kratos and Atreus set out to scatter Faye's ashes according to the official description. Kratos tries to raise Atreus to be a better god, while Atreus strives to teach his father to be a better person.
