With "Family Movie", Kevin Bacon (68) and Kyra Sedgwick (60) have brought a true family project to the screen. Accordingly, the premiere of the horror comedy at the film festival in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, also became a family affair: The couple, married since 1988, presented the film over the weekend together with their son Travis (37). Daughter Sosie Bacon (34) was unable to attend. She had to work, Kevin Bacon explained to the audience according to "The Hollywood Reporter".

For the family, it was also their first visit to the Czech Republic. "And we're having an incredible amount of fun", Bacon called out to the crowd. Afterwards, he and Kyra Sedgwick attempted a sentence in Czech together. A translator conveyed their message: "We hope you love the film as much as we love our family."

"Family Movie" on multiple levels

"Family Movie" lives up to its title in two ways. At the center is the Smith family, who spend their free time making low-budget horror films. They are portrayed by members of the Bacon-Sedgwick family. However, they didn't play themselves, Kevin Bacon clarified in conversation with "Variety".

While individual elements of their own family dynamic did flow into the film, "we're not making a documentary about our lives", the actor explained to the trade magazine on the sidelines of the festival.

The idea for "Family Movie" came to Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick during the coronavirus pandemic. The screenplay was written by Dan Beers, while the couple directed it themselves.

A family with many talents

For Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, "Family Movie" is not their first directing work. Bacon first directed a music video for the band New Order in 1990, before directing a TV movie for the first time six years later with "Abschied von Chase". Additional short films and individual series episodes followed later. Sedgwick made her directorial debut in 2017 with the TV drama "Story of a Girl" and subsequently also worked on several series episodes and films.

Their children have also pursued artistic paths. Sosie Bacon followed in her parents' acting footsteps and took on the lead role in the horror film "Smile", among others. Her brother Travis, on the other hand, focused on music and contributed the soundtrack to "Family Movie".

"Family Movie" celebrated its world premiere on March 13, 2026 at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas. A regular theatrical release date has not yet been announced.
